What composite is
Composite boards are made from wood fibre and polymer. They are sold as a finished board that holds its colour without oiling. Most come with a long manufacturer warranty, and they are laid on a frame much like timber boards. The price rises with the quality of the cap layer and the system used to fix the boards.
The published range
A national guide gives typical installed rates for a quality capped composite of $350 to $600 per square metre on a standard frame, for a straightforward ground-level deck. It says the specific product line, not the category, determines performance. These are not Sunshine Coast quotes, and the guide excludes stairs, balustrades and approvals.
The costs that are less visible
The guide says the higher material price is the visible cost. The less visible ones are closer joist spacing on some systems, proprietary clip fixings and slower installation. Ask the business whether the frame in the quote matches the manufacturer's requirements and whether the joist spacing is written down.
Heat underfoot
The guide says dark composites get hot underfoot in full sun. Mooloolaba, according to Wikipedia, faces the Coral Sea to the east, and a deck with open sky can see plenty of direct sun. Ask to feel a sample in the sun, choose a lighter board if your family goes barefoot, and plan shade for the hottest part of the day.
Fading, scratching and staining
The guide says budget ranges can fade, scratch or stain. A deck is used for furniture, barbecues and pets, so look at samples that have been used, not only at a shop display board. Ask for the manufacturer's warranty in writing and read what it excludes, such as staining, fading or damage from moving furniture.
Maintenance is lower, not zero
Composite avoids the oiling cycle but still needs periodic cleaning. The guide says the lifecycle arithmetic usually favours composite on maintenance spend and timber on repairability. A damaged composite board may not match a weathered run and can be difficult to extract from a clip system.
Clip systems
Hidden clips give a clean face with no screw heads but add material and labour cost and make replacing a single board harder. Ask how a board would be replaced in ten years, whether the clips are still sold for that product and what the warranty says about repairs.
Pool surrounds
The guide says pool surrounds add slip-resistance requirements, salt or chlorine exposure and interaction with pool barrier rules, and that composite and hardwood dominate this use because timber weathers faster. Ask for the slip rating of the board and confirm any pool barrier rule with a certifier.
Approval triggers
Sunshine Coast Council lists a development building work permit for decks over 10 m², with a side over 5 m, or 1.0 m or higher above the surface below. The material of the boards does not change those triggers. Ask a private building certifier to confirm the position for your property.
Bushfire areas
The Queensland Government says AS 3959 applies in designated bushfire prone areas, and that in the most extreme areas the deck must use non-combustible material. Composite is not the same as non-combustible. Ask the builder and the certifier whether the board you want is allowed at your site.
The frame still matters
Whatever the board, the frame has its own service life. The guide says treated pine framing in a damp, poorly ventilated space can need attention before the boards above it. Ask what the frame is made of, how it is ventilated and whether termite protection is included.
Licences and approvals
The QBCC says a licence is required for building work valued over $3,300. Ask each business which licence it holds, check it on the QBCC public register and ask who lodges any approval. We are a referral service and do not check anyone for you.
Comparing quotes
Price the same board line, width, fixing, joist spacing and frame from every business. A composite quote on a lightweight frame is not comparable with a properly specified alternative, as the guide notes.
Quote lines to look for
A good composite quote names the product line, the board width, the fixing clips, the joist spacing and the frame material. It shows stairs and balustrades as separate lines and says who lodges any approval. Ask for any missing item before you sign, and compare with at least two other written quotes.
How much does composite decking cost?
One national guide gives about $350 to $600 per m² installed for a quality capped composite on a ground-level deck. It is not a Sunshine Coast quote.
Does composite get hot?
The guide says dark composites get hot underfoot in full sun.
Does composite need oiling?
No, according to the guide. It still needs periodic cleaning and cheaper ranges can fade, scratch or stain.
Does composite change the approval rules?
Not for the council's size and height triggers. Ask a certifier about bushfire rules at your site.
