Decking in Mooloolaba

Harbour, headland and esplanade

Mooloolaba is a coastal suburb in the Sunshine Coast Region with 8,202 residents at the 2021 census. It is a separate suburb from Maroochydore, which is near it: Wikipedia puts Mooloolaba about 4.6 kilometres south-south-east of Maroochydore. The Coral Sea lies to its east and the Mooloolah River to its south, and Alexandra Headland and Buderim are next to it. The Esplanade has Sea Life Sunshine Coast, with an 80-metre underwater tunnel, plus shops, galleries and restaurants, and a memorial statue to Steve Irwin unveiled in 2007.

A working harbour

Mooloolaba Harbour has a large fleet of fishing vessels and is the northern base for the pilot vessels that guide shipping into Moreton Bay and the Port of Brisbane. Sheltered in the lee of Point Cartwright, it is an all-weather harbour favoured by recreational sailors. There are two marinas, the 2.2-hectare Wharf Marina and the 12.1-hectare Mooloolaba Marina, plus public boat ramps on Parkyn Parade.

Named for a snapper or a snake

The name Mooloolaba may come from the Aboriginal word mulu, meaning snapper fish, or mulla, meaning red-bellied black snake. It was Mooloolah Heads until Thomas O'Connor renamed it in 1919 when he subdivided land for sale. The surf club began in December 1922, and the state school began as a provisional school in 1933 with fewer than 50 students.

Beach cottages and apartments

A seaside suburb with a long holiday history has a mix of old beach cottages, canal villas and apartments facing the sea. A deck on a cottage block is a different job from a balcony on a unit, because the balcony belongs to a shared building. Tell each builder which you have, and who owns the structure before they quote.

Salt air and fixings

Mooloolaba sits right on the ocean, and a deck there is exposed to salt-laden air. The sources we cite give no local corrosion rule, so ask each builder what fixings, brackets and coating they will use, why those suit a coastal site, and what the warranty says about them. A good answer names the product and not just the word marine.

What a deck costs here

A national guide, not a Mooloolaba quote, puts a ground-level deck on a standard frame at a range of rates by board type, and says a raised deck of a metre or more can run from $500 to $1,000 a square metre and above because footings, bracing, stairs and rails become engineered. Ask each builder to price height, stairs and balustrade as separate lines.

Approval and bushfire

Sunshine Coast Council lists decks above 10 square metres, decks at or above one metre and stairs of three or more risers among the things needing a permit. The Queensland Government also publishes bushfire-prone rules using AS 3959. Ask each builder whether your address is mapped, and who will confirm it. Get that confirmation before you sign.

Esplanade and port

Mooloolaba and Maroochydore are separate suburbs, about 4.6 kilometres apart by Wikipedia's figure, with the Coral Sea to the east, the Mooloolah River to the south, and Alexandra Headland and Buderim next to Mooloolaba. Its esplanade holds the Sea Life marine park, galleries, bookshops and restaurants, with camping grounds, hostels and canal villas behind the apartments. Cruise ships sometimes anchor off the port.
